Late Cenozoic Evolution and Present Tectonic Setting of the Aegean–Hellenic Arc

چکیده

The Aegean–Hellenic arc is a deformed sector of long heterogeneous orogenic system (Tethyan belt), constituted by an inner old metamorphic crystalline core flanked younger chains European and African affinity, running from the Anatolian to Pelagonian zones. Due convergence between Arabian promontory Eurasian continental domain, that belt has undergone westward extrusion, accommodated oroclinal bending, at expense surrounding low buoyancy domains. Since late Miocene, when Aegean Tethyan collided with Adriatic promontory, southward bowing accelerated, leading consumption Levantine Ionian oceanic domains formation Mediterranean Ridge accretionary complex. peculiar distribution extensional compressional deformation in zone mainly been influenced different rheological behaviours ductile (Cyclades arc) brittle outer (Hellenic arc). developed without involving any major fragmentation, whereas underwent break its most curved sector, which led separation eastern (Crete–Rhodes) western (Peloponnesus) Hellenic sectors. 36. Late Miocene Paleoenvironments and Tectonic Setting of the Southern

During drilling of Leg 160 in the Eastern Mediterranean (April−May, 1995), Messinian (i.e., uppermost Miocene) facies were identified at a site at the base of the Cyprus slope (Site 968) and at two sites on the Eratosthenes Seamount (Sites 965 and 967). The new results can be compared with the recovery of Messinian evaporites from the Florence Rise west of Cyprus (Deep Sea Drilling Project Site...

Tectonic Evolution of the Japanese Island Arc System

■ Abstract Growth of the Japanese arc system, which has mainly taken place along the continental margin of Asia since the Permian, is the result of subduction of the ancient Pacific ocean floor. Backarc basin formation in the Tertiary shaped the presentday arc configuration. The neotectonic regime, which is characterized by strong eastwest compression, has been triggered by the eastward motion ...

Late Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the northwestern Tien Shan: New age estimates for the initiation of mountain building

The Tien Shan are the quintessential intracontinental range, situated more than 1000 km north of the suture between India and Asia. Their initiation and growth in the Cenozoic, however, remain poorly understood. In this study we present stratigraphic, detrital fission-track, and magnetostratigraphic results that provide a basis for reconstructing the Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the Kyrgyz Ra...

Numerical modeling of the late Cenozoic geomorphic evolution of Grand

The late Cenozoic geomorphic evolution of Grand Canyon has been infl uenced by three primary tectonic and drainage adjustment events. First, 1 km of relief was produced along the Grand Wash–Wheeler Fault system beginning at 16.5 Ma. Second, the ancestral Colorado River became integrated with the lower Colorado River through Grand Canyon between 5.5 and 6 Ma. Third, the Colorado River was infl u...
